For many, the beginning of the year can be a time to reflect on decisions made over the last 12 months. What worked, what didn’t? What to continue doing to meet your new year’s goals and what to stop doing? As you may be embarking on this kind of reflection as well, I thought it would be helpful to lend a piece of advice that has kept many on the right track.

What Fencing Taught Me about Business

When I was 17, I joined the fencing club at my English boarding school, and was introduced to what would become a never-ending source of motivation, pressure, excitement and strategic mental training. Thirty-seven years later, I’m still physically and mentally sharp thanks to the life lessons I’ve learned from this rewarding sport.

Tips for a Richer Life

I am an experienced snowmobiler, and nothing excites me more than teaching others the sport. When my friend Peter, who is in his 70’s, expressed interest in accompanying me on my latest snowmobiling adventure I was thrilled.

It was snowing hard and I was cutting first tracks through fresh powder. I took a brief look in my mirror to make sure I hadn’t lost anyone and was quietly relieved to see my friend Mike’s headlight behind me. Beyond that I could make out two more lights, which meant our team of seven people were still together and I could continue whipping along on the trail.

The Weightlifter’s Guide to Building a Stronger Business

What can weightlifting teach us about building a better business? I recently read Antifragile: Things That Gain from Disorder, by Nassim Nicholas Taleb, and have been thinking about how his antifragile theory applies to running a business. Taleb’s concept of antifragility builds on a premise framed in his earlier book, The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable. “Black swan” events—large and dramatic shifts in our economic and social systems—drive the most significant opportunities and results in business, he argues, and yet are virtually impossible to model or predict.

Not in My Job Description

When I think back to 3 April, the memory that most strikes me is the statement: “He started to kick me in the head because it didn’t leave bruises.” I was sitting in a women’s crisis shelter, listening to this sobbing woman recall for caseworkers the history of violence in her home, the rape that occurred just days before and her panicked plea for a restraining order against her husband.

I sat shell-shocked. Her story left me bewildered, to say the least. I found myself wondering: “How did I get here? I’m not Danielle’s friend. I’m her boss.”

I’m really impatient. I mean really impatient. Maybe even a dose of hyperactivity disorder. I need stuff done now. I hate waiting.
One of my Kris Kringle presents was a stamp that says “F-cking Urgent.” I am into efficiency.

Why? I like getting stuff done, so I can do more stuff and achieve more, learn more, grow more and then have more choice to do more fun things when I want.

Know Like Trust & Try

Customers buy from vendors they know, like and trust. Chances are you will buy a Pepsi or Coke over a generic soda, even if the generic pop is cheaper. You do this because you know, like and trust the Pepsi or Coke brand. Maybe you know, like and trust a brand so much that you have built a loyalty to it and vow never to consume the other brand.

Women Entrepreneurs: Inspiration from Albert Einstein

As a woman entrepreneur for over 20 years I have steered my business enterprise through both calm and turbulent waters. I have been called crazy for my vision, stupid for taking risks, applauded through high growth, brilliant for receiving Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Awards, brave for standing up to a billion dollar predator, and ignored and shunned in times of difficulty. Through it all I have learned that the greatest support comes from the people you would least expect, and from never losing faith. Faith is not only belief in yourself but in what you cannot quite see from where you may be standing.
