Hot, Humid, and Humbling

That’s the only way I know how to describe July 19th, my birthday and the day I battled against myself as I competed in IRONMAN Zurich.

With my family camped out race-side, and my friends cheering me on digitally via (an athlete tracker/race tracker/webcam?), I felt unstoppable. Combine that excitement and my adrenaline with my last year of training and you can imagine the laser-like focus I had on that finish line.

Mistakes are the Best Teachers

But I try and look at every mistake as both the awakening of a problem that I never knew existed and the beginning of solving that problem. Did I always look at it that way? Hardly.

Entrepreneurship: The Effort between Risk and Reward

An entrepreneur has infallible passion and has to have an almost delusional sense of reality. There is only one outcome. Success. Risk is understood, on an intrinsic level, but belied. When I started dTS, I was clear only about one thing. I had to. I had to do my part to somehow make the world a better place. Naiveté. I still do my best to retain as much of my sense of wonder and ingenuousness. It keeps me humble in a world that is so much larger than my passion, and also acutely aware of just how much I still have to learn. Fundamentally, it keeps me wanting to try to innovate success.

After the Entrepreneurship Door Opens, Then What?

That’s the situation I found myself in almost a decade ago, when I was a global private banker with Royal Bank of Canada. After moving up the corporate career ladder in the banking and investment brokerage business, I was stuck.

Thankfully, to paraphrase the lyrics of bluesman Keb Mo, I found out that the door to entrepreneurship was open.

Don’t Just Keep the Lights On

I used to believe that the most difficult part of being a startup entrepreneur was the lack of security, the long nights or even health insurance issues. Coming up with a market-changing idea seemed like the easy part, but the real issue is one that many entrepreneurs tend to tackle last: the business’s financial model.

Many founders simply decide on a revenue model that worked for other companies or work to gain customers and then monetize the product’s value. Others try to make as much as they can while they can, forgetting that short-term profits (just keeping the lights on) don’t lead to long-lasting businesses (big payoffs).

How the EO Listserv Helped My Business

A few weeks ago, I found myself in a challenging position with my business, and I really needed some guidance from other business owners who could understand my predicament. I turned to the EO-DC Yahoo! Listserv and sent out a plea for help from my fellow government contracting business owner peeps. What I really needed was some “online group therapy” in how to resolve collections issues.

What resulted completely surpassed my expectations. It was a truly transformational, highly educational experience-sharing forum that resulted in ideas that all participants could implement, and for my business, it led to a total overhaul of my invoicing and collections processes. Ideas included:
