Get Advice From The Best In Business

I am proof that you don’t necessarily need a suit to succeed: I didn’t finish high school, and after talking my way into university, dropped out with a semester to go. Most of what I’ve learned about business has come from starting 1-800-GOT-JUNK? in 1989, and building it from the ground up.

However, just because I didn’t complete a formal education doesn’t mean I stopped learning. Rather, I taught myself through trial and error, and more importantly, I asked experts for help.

It would have been easy to spend my life as a Rubbish Boy.

At 19, I started a junk-removal business called The Rubbish Boys to pay my university tuition. In only a few years, we had 11 employees and were pulling in half a million dollars in revenue a year. The Rubbish Boys were predictable and profitable. And it would have been easy to stay the course – but I couldn’t.

For many entrepreneurs, the thrill of early success is quickly replaced by the frustration of hitting a ceiling. You’ve cornered a market, or at least part of one, and you’re good at what you do. But you’ve reached a limit in terms of revenue, size and profitability. You know you want to grow, but what’s the next step?

Meetings can be painful. A quarter of all office workers complain they spend more time in meetings talking about work than actually doing it. In fact, research suggests that unproductive meetings may be the biggest time thief on the job. But they’re not the only one.

Our e-mail in-boxes are crammed. Texts and calls stream in constantly. We try to bridge the gap with more technology, but these wonder apps always seem to come with their own waterfall of instant messages and cat GIFs. With all these distractions, who needs another meeting?

Why do some businesses fail during tough times while others succeed? I have searched for the answer to that question since I began my business 16 years ago. In my search for knowledge and professional guidance, I have worked with and learned from hundreds of successful entrepreneurs and top-level executives. The more time I spent getting to know these people, the clearer it became that each of them shared three common characteristics that ultimately defined their success: focus, faith and effort.
