As a busy entrepreneur, sometimes you need to blow off steam to regain your perspective on things. Some people relax by sailing, playing sports or watching movies. For me, I find my calm through ultra running, racing at a distance greater than 26.2 miles. It’s an extreme sport that pushes you to the limit, forces you to learn from your mistakes and encourages you to take risks … all of the things I do in business every day.

BOLD: In your book, you discussed the difficulties of working with your best friend. What’s the hardest part of this working relationship?
NF: I think the most difficult part is that our friendship does and can suffer. There are weekends when we won’t hang out, we won’t talk or don’t plan trips because we’re always working together; that’s probably the biggest negative. Still, I think it’s important to recognize that the friendship should come first, and that’s the most important thing. We try not to let the business put a strain on it.

BOLD: What inspired you to write Effortless Entrepreneur?
NF: Believe it or not, it stemmed from an Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO) event in Las Vegas. One of the speakers was talking about the importance of writing a book, and how everybody who has written a book says they wish they had done it 10 years earlier. Omar had been in that same breakout session, and we started thinking about what we were going to write about. We realized we had all these crazy stories about getting into business, and we knew we could talk about our experiences. It was a three-year process from that EO event to making the book into a real, living product.

How to Make Your Top Salesperson Quit

When it comes to work, sales can be tricky— it’s a stressful part of the business equation that can make or break companies. Believe it or not, most companies tend to drive their top-producing salespeople out of the organization and into the welcoming arms of the competition. After all the time and effort they expend to locate, hire and train top producers, why do most of them do things that make their top salespeople quit?

In my years of experience working in sales, this question can be summed up in one statement: Most companies don’t pay attention to the basic drivers/motivators for top producers. As a formerly top-producing software sales executive and now CEO of a firm that recruits top producers for its clients, I can tell you with certainty that, if your company has a hard time holding on to salespeople, it’s probably for one of the following reasons:

  • You’ve changed their compensation structure, and not for the better. The number one cause of a disgruntled top producer is negative modifications to their compensation structure.  With salespeople, the compensation plan is a sacred covenant— everyone agrees that these are the rules. Top producers inevitably knock the ball out of the park, and management says, “Oh no!  These guys are making too much money,” so they change the compensation plan. The usual suspects are caps on commissions, reducing overall commission pay-outs (which kills trust faster than anything) and taking away clients to give to other salespeople. A lot of times this scenario happens because the business owner is undercharging for their product or service and they realize—after the sale—that paying out high sales commissions causes them to lose money.

Courage is the Key to Great Leadership

Aristotle called courage the first virtue, because it makes all of the other virtues possible. In addition to being the most important human virtue, it is the most important business virtue, as well. Think about it: Other important business concepts like leadership, innovation and sales wither in the absence of courage.

Leadership takes making bold and often unpopular decisions. Leadership takes courage. Innovation involves creating ground-breaking but tradition-defying ideas. Innovation takes courage. Sales require being repeatedly rejected before closing a deal. Sales take courage. Take away courage, and sales, innovation and leadership lose their potency.
