It was back in 2013 when Bill Gates said, “The Internet is becoming the town square for the global village of tomorrow.” Today, the Internet and access to it is omnipresent. The Wi-Fi revolution has taken over the world and, as a business owner, you may be losing business if you’re not offering free Wi-Fi.
Free Wi-Fi is no longer the domain of coffee shops and libraries. All styles of eateries, from posh restaurants to fast food joints, have taken to offering free Wi-Fi. Even supermarkets and spas are joining in.

A sales message designed for one situation will not necessarily work well in another. For example, you may have perfected your 30-second elevator speech (or “30-second commercial,” as it’s often called). This works great if you are actually in an elevator and have someone’s complete attention. But it will get you those glazed looks if you try to work 30 seconds of monologue into a conversation in the buffet line at a networking event.

“A-players” for your company … but I’m a super-simple fella: I want to know all about Facebook and how to use it to my advantage. I don’t mean learn the best way to showcase the burrito I’m eating or post a silly meme. I mean: How do I use Facebook to actually grow my business? So, I did some exploring.

At this year’s Forbes Under 30 Summit, it was easy to see the impact the speakers have had in their respective areas. From US Olympic champions, such as Michael Phelps and Aly Raisman, to world-renowned chef Bobby Flay, the lineup was full of inspirational stories from varying backgrounds. However, they were all tied together by one common factor: entrepreneurship.
I was truly honored to represent EO at this event and found a lot of value, both personally and professionally, in listening to these speakers. Throughout the two days of programming, it was interesting to see a different side to these wildly-popular public figures. While they are mainly known for their athletic or culinary successes, for example, they also are striving to build, grow and maintain their brands and businesses.
Here are two major takeaways that I found in attending the event:

What’s in a name? As it turns out— a lot, actually. Here’s a fun example: What runs through your mind when you think of a “Nigel”? Perhaps you conjure up thoughts of a weedy little Englishman with a wet handshake? He got picked on in school, struggled to find mates and picks his nose when no one’s looking? Now what comes to mind when you think of a “Bambi”? I’m sure you already have images of what she looks, sounds and acts like. And you know she was the most popular girl in school.

This article was written by EO Vancouver member, Calvin Johnson.
I’ve been an EO member for 15 years, but it wasn’t until 2014 that I became involved with the Global Student Entrepreneur Awards (GSEA). I had served many roles previously on the BC Children’s Hospital Board, but I wanted to transition into something that engaged young entrepreneurs – and I found one. Our chapter president approached me and asked if I would be interested in creating a competition, with the catch that we’d never participated in GSEA before. I’d say, “Be careful what you wish for,” but this turned out to be an experience unlike anything else I’ve done in my career.
