7 Reasons to Start a Company

There are so many reasons to not start a new business and so many people who will say you are crazy for trying. Of course, if you are reading this, you likely did start a business. It’s obviously too late for you (and me), so I’d like to share what I’ve learned for those friends and family who might want to follow in your footsteps. I’ve been involved with four new businesses; one as an employee and three as the owner. Here are some things I learned along the way:

Asking the Right Questions Begins with Us

Learning to ask the right questions begins with a simple question that we should ask ourselves: “Am I on the right track?”

The Problem
We all seek answers. In fact, we need answers. Why? Our minds are trained at an early age to minimize uncertainty. When confronted with mysteries we ask ourselves why? how? when? questions.

As leaders, we’re confronted with – and in many cases, bombarded with – uncertainty. Uncertainty with the economy, cash flow, products, and processes. In essence, it’s hard to predict how each will behave. Faced with these problems, we seek to minimize these uncertainties by obtaining answers from people responsible for these areas. However, in the course of obtaining answers, we often do some of the following:

For many people, hoarding is human nature. I should know: My company—1-800-GOT-JUNK?—found fame when it was profiled on a television show about helping people who are buried in their own junk. Hoarding “stuff” can be unhealthy for people, and it can be even worse for entrepreneurs. Leaders in business can’t afford to hold on to past failures or refuse to let go of decision-making. It’s imperative that we learn from our mistakes, give others a chance to shine and let go to level up. Here’s how you can learn to shrug off the “stuff” that doesn’t matter.

Providing Constructive Feedback

At K.Coaching, we work with many clients that want to improve their leadership and management skills. Often we see managers avoiding crucial conversations or giving constructive feedback. Sometimes it may feel better to just ignore the situation, hoping that it will go away, instead of addressing the situation appropriately and constructively. Most likely, the manager will provide short, pointed, unflattering remarks to get a sales rep’s attention.

The next time an employee requires constructive feedback, consider it an opportunity to impact their future behavior in a positive way. If given properly, constructive feedback can make a difference between an employee’s success and failure,since its purpose is to improve their job performance.

You Could Write What I Know About Millennials On the Back of a Postage Stamp

Last Thursday, based in the wonderful surroundings of William Fry’s HQ on Grand Canal, my two big stressors came together, Millennials and public speaking.

A couple of years ago I decided to step out of my comfort zone and join the brilliant Entrepreneurs Organization. I have learned a lot, met so many people and benefited greatly since I joined the group. If you ever need help, the EO members alongside your smaller Forum group are there for you.

Four weeks ago, my fellow EO member Orlaith Carmody invited me to do a talk at an upcoming EO Ignite event. Naively I agreed to speak prior to understanding the topic that I would have to deliver a presentation on “Millennials – Raising, Employing, Understanding & Inspiring them.” Now I was really nervous…

Ever since my parents bought our first family computer back when I was a kid, I have been passionate about technology and assisting others. Throughout high school and college, I often found myself helping friends and neighbors learn how to use computers. In 2000, between my junior and senior years of college, I turned what I was passionate about into a real business, officially becoming an entrepreneur. I worked from my dorm room, providing IT services to small companies.
