The Early Days of .gif Files
Think back to the early days of the internet, back to the time where you went to the store and shelled out a hard-earned $40 to purchase a screensaver featuring flying toasters in order to prevent screen-burn on your bulbous CRT monitor. Now remember the visual smorgasbord that the best internet marketers were employing at the time – an all-in appeal to grab your attention for more than a fleeting second. Yes, I’m talking about the early days of the animated .gif file format.

In 2012, the U.S. passed the JOBS (Jumpstart Our Business Startups) Act with bi-partisan support. When I joined EO, I was 75 pounds heavier than I am today. I remember sitting at a Warren Rustand event with a beer in my hand thinking to myself, why are all these successful entrepreneurs in shape, and I’m the only fatso in the room?
The problem was that I was completely unaware that I was obese. Sure, I knew that I was fatter than I would like to be, but I focused on my business and I didn’t think that my health impacted the way I showed up in the business. Making my business the number-one priority before my personal well-being held us back.

A positive and energetic culture around the office is not something you can, or should, fake.
Tom Turner, an Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO) member from Nashville, is the co-founder and steward of purpose of DSi, one of the nation’s leading providers of advanced electronic discovery and digital forensics services. We asked Tom how company culture can help businesses generate new clients. Here’s what he had to say:
In 1998, Enron executives wanted to entice investors with their newly created commodity trading center, Enron Energy Services (EES). They played host to a group of Wall Street analysts who walked through a room filled with giant television screens, computers and employees making deals and taking trades over the phone.

Having trouble scaling and growing your business? Here’s how to systematize for expansion.
Jason Swenk was 2 weeks away from shutting down his agency: “Because we didn’t have a clear vision of where we’re going. We didn’t know that ideal customer, what their biggest challenges were. We didn’t have the right things in place. We had the wrong people in the wrong seats. We weren’t charging enough. So there are many different things that we were doing wrong.”
It’s not entirely uncommon for business owners to feel like Jason was when he was in the midst of building his business.

Standing atop the 14,200 “milk bottle” summit of Starlight Peak, we watched the sun continue the last hour of its descent over the mountains to the west. We knew we had at least eight hours of descent to base camp – most of which would now be done with headlamps in the black of a moonless night.
Although we summited via a different route than we were to descend, I had gone this route a few years before. But now a night descent would be a test of my memory.

While tenacity, perseverance and business savvy are all requirements for any successful business, I think another philosophy has really paved the way for my business, Duval Roofing. I’ve always believed a worker is only as good as his tools, and with that in mind, I’ve never shied away from trying out new technologies, exploring up-and-coming business practices or being the first contractor in my area to invest in a new type of machinery or equipment.
