Tatiana Byron is an EO New York member, founder of The Wedding Salon and president of 4PM Events, a dynamic, full-service special events company, concentrating on high-end weddings, charity fundraisers, private parties, fashion shows, corporate functions and luxury bridal shows.

1. How did you get involved in the event-management industry?

I attended Boston University on an academic scholarship, but I still needed additional funds for ordinary living expenses. I initially worked at Smith Barney, cold-calling for a stock broker, but I thought that I was being underpaid and overworked.

From Robot to Monk

I didn’t understand it. I did everything I was “supposed to do.” I was a successful entrepreneur. I married the pretty girl. I was well-educated. I’d lived all over the world. I even played pro basketball and partied in the Playboy Mansion. But I wasn’t happy. Not even close.

Then I joined the Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO). One of the first things I learned is that I wasn’t alone in feeling unhappy. Before many of us join EO, we think that everyone is happy and rich except for us. Then after our first Forum meeting, we start to feel better knowing that everyone’s either going through the same thing or have been in a similar situation.

The Business Case for Diversity

As a staffing company, many of our clients serve specific communities, and we strive to provide them with team members who are locally connected and committed to their missions. Company-wide, this means we have an extremely diverse staff in terms of age, race, religion and education as well as geographic and demographic factors. Without embracing that strategy of providing our clients with the best people for their environments, leading to diversity for our company, we would not have had the necessary tools to grow to where we are today.

Leveraging Entrepreneurial Experience to Invest in Startups

As successful entrepreneurs we are often asked to invest in new startup companies. Last year, fellow EO St. Louis member Rick Holton and I professionalized our angel investment activities by joining three other veteran entrepreneurs starting an early stage venture capital fund, Cultivation Capital. A recent Kaufman Foundation research report concluded that venture funds managed by former entrepreneurs yielded higher returns than those that weren’t, and our first two years of results are confirming that assertion. Reflecting back, we have recognized a few ways that our entrepreneurial experience has helped us be better investors.
